Ghost Arcadia's latest EP, What We Become, marks a bold step forward for the alternative rock/post-hardcore outfit, showcasing their evolution and musical prowess. Released independently on December 6, 2024, the EP dives deep into themes of self-discovery, belief, and perception, offering a raw and cathartic journey through its short four-track length.

Opening with the track, "Cyclone," Ghost Arcadia sets the tone with a commentary on the rat race of daily life. The track's dynamic shifts from atmospheric electronic elements to crushing riffs and tight drum grooves, while the band's vocalist Reuben Beau Davie also raps on the track, which all reflects the band's ability to craft a whirlwind of sound that mirrors the chaos and monotony of modern existence.

"Stray" follows, inspired by defiance and the celebration of individuality, as well as the video game of the same name. Musically, it's one of their heaviest releases to date, even with some screaming vocals sprinkled throughout, drawing influence from bands like Architects and Enter Shikari while also paying homage to the video game music of the '90s. The accompanying music video, a collaboration with artist George McCubbin, adds a surreal visual layer, echoing themes of breaking free from societal norms.

"Under" continues the EP's exploration with a nod to Ghost Arcadia's heavier inclinations. It's a reflection on personal battles and overcoming adversity, resonating with themes of addiction and self-doubt. The track's intensity and honesty serve as a powerful reminder of resilience and the strength found within one's darkest moments.

The EP culminates with its title track, "What We Become," a poignant five-minute reflection on transformation and identity. Beginning with delicate piano melodies and poetic lyricism akin to Sleep Token's emotive style, the song builds into a crescendo of aggression and raw emotion. Here, Ghost Arcadia fully embraces their sonic evolution, questioning what remains after shedding layers of doubt and uncertainty.

Throughout What We Become, Ghost Arcadia demonstrates their growth as musicians and storytellers.

Their willingness to blend genres and push creative boundaries underscores their commitment to authenticity and artistic integrity, with influences from across the musical spectrum, with elements noticeably from pop, electronic dance music, rock, and metal. The EP also shares the message of defiance against conformity, Ghost Arcadia asserts themselves as a band unafraid to challenge conventions and carve out their own path in the alternative rock landscape.

For fans of alternative music seeking depth and intensity, What We Become offers a compelling narrative and a sonic journey that resonates long after the final track fades away. Ghost Arcadia's EP is not just a collection of songs but a testament to the power of music to explore, provoke, and inspire change.
