  • Jade Turner - Breathe

Trailblazing Winnipeg singer-songwriter Jade Turner returns with her most personal and emotionally profound album yet, Breathe . As a masterful storyteller and dynamic vocalist, Turner showcases her ability to transform deeply personal experiences into universally resonant songs. Her third studio album, set for release on February 7, 2025, spans the genres of Americana, Roots, and Country, offering a compelling collection of eleven songs that explore themes of self-discovery, resilience, and emotional healing. Featuring collaborations with legendary Canadian artist Crystal Shawanda and rising Manitoba talent Sebastian Gaskin, Breathe  is an evocative, raw, and powerful statement from an artist coming into her own. Turner’s latest release follows the biggest year of her career, solidifying her place as one of Canada’s most celebrated singer-songwriters. In 2024, she was a semifinalist in SiriusXM’s Top of the Country  competition, gained national recognition through Breakfast Television and eTalk, and surpassed 500,000 streams across her musical catalogue. She won her fourth career Manitoba Country Music Award, took home the Vince Fontaine Indigenous Song Award at the 2024 SOCAN Awards, and earned the Kevin Walters Memorial Songwriting Award from Manitoba Music. Further cementing her impact, Turner performed at the iHeartRadio Canadian Country Music Awards  pre-show and was a featured artist in the National Music Centre and SiriusXM’s EQ Live  showcase. With continued national airplay and appearances on the Indigenous Music Countdown, Turner’s artistry has never been more widely recognized. Firmly rooted in storytelling, Breathe  serves as a diary-like exploration of Turner’s life experiences, including becoming a mother, navigating divorce, and confronting the impact of addiction on loved ones. Turner describes the album as her therapy, saying, “I don’t normally talk about my vulnerabilities, but this is my way of talking about it—by singing it.”  In moving beyond the traditional confines of country music, she delves deeper into Americana and Roots, crafting a collection that is as sonically rich as it is emotionally charged. Standout Tracks: "You’re Only Nice When I’m Leaving" – A stark and haunting Roots ballad, this track finds Turner reflecting on toxic relationship patterns with sparse instrumentation, allowing her sharp lyrical insight to shine, as well as her emotive voice. "That Wind" – Inspired by Turner’s lifelong experiences with dogsledding, this track serves as a powerful metaphor for chasing one’s dreams, its stirring instrumentation capturing the essence of resilience and freedom. "Breathe" – The album's title track, which was co-written with Manitoba singer-songwriters Rhianna Rae Saj and Sebastian Gaskin, is a meditative exploration of anxiety. Using a layered blend of R&B, Roots, and Americana, Turner builds an immersive sonic landscape designed to help listeners ground themselves and find peace. "Deadweight" – Co-written with Crystal Shawanda, this powerful, anthemic track explores the pain of bullying and the journey toward self-empowerment, marking a full-circle moment for Turner, who was inspired to pursue music after seeing Shawanda on television as a child. With Breathe , Jade Turner has crafted an album that not only solidifies her standing as one of Canada’s most gifted songwriters but also speaks to the universal struggles and triumphs of personal transformation. Her fearless honesty, combined with her ability to navigate difficult themes with both sensitivity and strength, makes Breathe  an unforgettable listen. More than just an album, it is a testament to Turner’s evolution as an artist and as a woman—bold, unfiltered, and profoundly authentic. Whether you’re seeking solace, inspiration, or simply an album that resonates with raw emotion, Breathe  is a must-listen. • Rainbow City Park - Fruitless EP

Rainbow City Park’s debut EP, Fruitless , is a captivating fusion of shoegaze and alt-pop that showcases the band’s dynamic sound and emotional depth. Released on February 4, 2025, this five-track collection solidifies the group’s place as an exciting force in the indie rock landscape, blending lush instrumentals, poignant lyrics, and an overarching theme of grappling with unresolved emotions. The EP kicks off with its title track, "Fruitless," a masterful introduction that layers swirling guitars with driving percussion. The track echoes the ethereal, wall-of-sound aesthetics of DIIV and My Bloody Valentine, immersing the listener in a sonic haze. Frontwoman Danielle Judith’s emotive vocals navigate themes of inadequacy and perseverance, building to an electrifying three-guitar crescendo before collapsing into a haunting final chorus. It’s an audacious start that establishes the EP’s introspective tone. "Chalk" is the EP's standout pop-rock offering, seamlessly blending catchy melodies with alt-rock intensity. Judith’s vocal delivery, reminiscent of Taylor Swift’s lyrical storytelling and Paramore’s high-energy anthems, takes center stage. The track’s lyrics recount the rise and fall of a relationship, capturing both vulnerability and empowerment. Lines like “23 months of flattery, with moments that could fill galleries” resonate deeply, while the defiant bridge (“at least you taught me something that is worth it, he who hesitates gets deserted”) leaves a lasting impression. The EP explores varied textures with tracks like "Provincial" and "Foresight," offering moments of introspection and dynamic shifts that keep the listener engaged. However, it’s the EP's closing track, "Water Under The Bridge," that truly cements Fruitless  as a cohesive and impactful body of work. The track introduces acoustic guitars, muted piano, and ambient studio nuances, providing a raw, intimate soundscape. Judith’s haunting question—“When do I get to call this water under the bridge?”—encapsulates the lingering uncertainties of the EP, inviting listeners to ponder their own unresolved stories. Fruitless  was recorded at the Panoramic House during a week-long residency with producer Mike Davis, whose previous work with Pool Kids and Lo Moon informs the EP’s lush yet disciplined sound. The mastering, handled by Ed Brooks (Pearl Jam, Death Cab for Cutie), ensures every element shines, from the shimmering guitars to the delicate piano notes. Davis’ collaboration with the band brings out their signature moments, resulting in a debut that feels polished yet deeply personal. Formed in 2022, Rainbow City Park has quickly carved a niche in the indie scene, and Fruitless  is a testament to their artistic vision. Known for their engaging live performances and storytelling, the band draws on a wide array of influences—from shoegaze to pop and folk—to craft music that resonates emotionally. With Fruitless , Rainbow City Park not only establishes themselves as a band to watch but also sets a high bar for what’s to come. This EP invites listeners into a richly textured world where beauty and melancholy coexist, making it a standout debut for 2025. There are songs about separation, internal conflicts, and creative disappointments, all of which added up to a pervasive melancholy in his late 20s and early 30s. He’d spent nearly a decade gigging around Nashville, balancing other jobs adjacent to the music industry with his own musical pursuits. “I wasn’t expecting to feel so hollowed out after my twenties,”   says Gilligan , “and I was wondering if I still wanted to make music. But I felt like I owed it to myself to give it another try, even though in the back of my mind I’m thinking, What can I add to the conversation? Why would anyone want to listen to what I have to say? ‘Anything’ came out of that, and it’s been a good message to live with. A lot of people think that if they’re not doing something super ambitious and highly visible, that means they’re doing something wrong or they’re not being brave enough. But it takes so much bravery to do anything at all.” Perfectly embodying the buoyant spirit of Party of One , a somber, yet hopeful collection of songs, is the song “Ceiling.” With ethereal, soft rock chords and disarming lyrics, it’s about  “feeling the pull out of a phase of life and moving into a new one,” says Gilligan .  “No hard feelings, it’s just about taking the next step away from something when you no longer need it and it doesn’t need you .” Emoting a melancholic curiosity, the song “500 Questions,” layers meditative lyrics over ‘70s-inspired, psych-rock instrumentation, while the album’s opener, “Anything,” emphasizes the artist’s vocal delivery as  “feather-light, resting easily atop a bed of warm guitars and effortless grooves” (Under The Radar). Another standout track is the introspective “Tightrope,” which shimmers with shuffling rhythms and gentle harmonies buoyed by Gilligan’s sharp songwriting.  Gilligan drew from the ‘70s pop and soft rock of his childhood, creating a sound that resonates with personal references: the graceful melodicism of Paul Simon, the restless experimentation of Todd Rundgren, the emotional directness of James Taylor. “My mom was raising five kids—I was the middle child—and she would take us on long drives to make us sleepy. And she would play Wings, America, Christopher Cross. Instead of rejecting her music, I embraced all of it. That’s the stuff I’m thinking about when I make music. It completely formed my sensibilities. My mom inadvertently crafted the palette of Party of One.” Party of One  marks a new step in Gilligan’s musical journey, following the success of his 2021 EP, Go Around .  For those who might not be familiar with his sound or presence in the Nashville indie scene, Gilligan has worked in various capacities with artists like Halfnoise,  Madi Diaz, Elke, and Medium Build, whom he recently opened for on tour last fall. His diverse experiences on stage have infused his music with a rich blend of influences, setting the stage for his most personal project to date.
Gilligan spent years recording, mixing, and even sequencing another  record, but something didn’t sit right. It took bravery to set it aside and start again from scratch. In 2022 he spent a month in California, savoring the change of scenery and working with a different set of musicians. In one memorable afternoon, he and Jacob Jeffries (who plays keyboards for Vulfpeck) wrote a song called “Tight Rope,” out now. It’s a gentle ballad with chiming guitars, shimmering keyboards, and lyrics about how falling off the tightrope gets you back down to earth. It was a breakthrough. “Honestly it felt less like doing a co-write and more like finding a long-lost member of my musical family. I remember thinking, This is how I want the album to sound. I built everything else around that song. It came out like a sneeze, but the others came together with more time and care.”  When he's not making music, Gilligan enjoys spending his time outdoors, fishing or working on vintage music equipment. His passion for music and creativity is matched by his appreciation for the simple pleasures in life, and he strives to create songs that resonate on a genuine level with his audience. • Interview with Caroline Romano

I had a chat with pop singer-songwriter Caroline Romano ahead of the release of her new single “IDK These Days,” set for release on Friday, January 31, 2025, and her upcoming EP, How The Good Girls Die , which releases on February 21st. Your new single “IDK These Days” is filled with such raw emotion and heartfelt lyrics. Were there any experiences or inspirations that helped you achieve that? Caroline: Thank you! I wrote “IDK These Days” last winter. I was in a season of my life where I was struggling emotionally and mentally, but I couldn’t find a specific reason as to why. I remember calling my mom and her asking me how I was doing and the only answer I could come back with was, “IDK these days.” I think it’s become a habit of mine to often mask how I’m really feeling when dealing with those kinds of emotions. I often want to put on the front that I’m doing well even when it feels like the walls are falling down around me. Writing “IDK These Days” was definitely an admittance to myself that it’s okay to not have it all together, and to feel inexplicably lost or sad or angry sometimes. But it’s also a reminder for me, even a year later, that those feelings won’t last forever. It doesn’t have to be scary, and it doesn’t mean that’s who you are. I’m very grateful for this song, and the people who helped me work through everything it’s about. How did you decide on the single artwork for “IDK These Days” Caroline: The artwork for “IDK These Days” is a photo I took on my phone on tour last year. I remember feeling a bit overwhelmed and in my head about things. We passed by this stretch of mountains on the drive down to California, and it really was just this “it’s all going to be okay” feeling that came over me. I thought it was fitting for this song, and I also just thought it looked cool. Can you describe “IDK These Days” in three words? Caroline: Introspective, direct, truthful. How long was the process in creating “IDK These Days” from start to finish? Caroline: “IDK These Days” was written in an afternoon with my friends Cali Rodi and John the Dropout. We’d had a session scheduled in the middle of a big snowstorm in Nashville, and I had a poem written about the conversation with my mom from a few nights before. I asked if they were down to write a song based on that -it felt fitting with the weather- and we finished it in a few hours. There was never really a demo version of this song, as the guitar and vocal we recorded that day are the exact same on the final. I felt like there’d be no replicating the emotion that came with the first time singing that song, so we left it pretty much as is. How did you come up with the title for your new EP How The Good Girls Die ? Caroline: How The Good Girls Die was actually the last song written for the EP. I had the concept for this sort of cautionary tale about growing up and realizing you’re not the same person everyone around you once knew you to be. After writing that song, I looked back and realized there was this connecting storyline through several other songs I’d written earlier in the year. It felt like a linear story of how this girl ended up where she does in the title track. What was the songwriting process like for How The Good Girls Die ? Caroline: The songwriting process for this EP was very different for each song on the project, which I really enjoyed. The first half of the EP was written at the end of 2023 into early 2024 in both LA and Nashville, just as songs I really wanted to write but didn’t know where they’d end up. The last three songs on the EP were written with my good friend and collaborator John the Dropout here in Nashville. We made a plan at the beginning of last year to get together on Mondays and write whatever we wanted, with no one goal in mind. “IDK These Days,” “They Say,” and “How the Good Girls Die” were the results of that. When did you know when the EP was done? Caroline: I knew the EP was done once I wrote the title track. I realized in that moment that for one, there was an EP, and two, that it was completed with that song. It’s never how I’ve gone about starting or completing a project before, but I’m very glad it worked out the way it did. How would you describe your new EP How The Good Girls Die ? Caroline: I’d describe this EP as both messy yet intentional. To me, it’s like a shattered disco ball, lovely yet disastrous, all at the same time. It’s six songs of opposing emotions and contradicting feelings. I think it’s all of the emotions I’ve had as a twenty-something girl walking home after a night out. It’s a little heartbroken and a little ready to take on the world. Is there a song on the EP that you’re most excited for fans to hear? Caroline: I’m excited for fans to hear “They Say” as it’s very different, both sonically and lyrically than any song I’ve released before. I think it’s the most surprising one on the project, so I’m really eager to see how listeners react to it. If you could set fans up with the perfect environment to listen to How The Good Girls Die , what would it be? Caroline: I think the perfect listening experience for How The Good Girls Die is on a walk or a drive through your favorite part of town as the sun is starting to set. Or really anywhere you feel the most like yourself. I always like moving and seeing lights and people around me when I’m listening to new music, and I think this project feels like that in many ways. It’s busy and shiny, yet reflective and dark all at the same time. Check out more from Caroline Romano: Website  | Facebook  | Instagram  | Twitter  | TikTok  | YouTube

  • JayWood Shares New Single "BIG TINGS" Featuring Tune-Yards

“ BIG TINGS ” marks the determined return of Polaris Music Prize nominee JayWood , joined by Merrill Garbus and Nate Brenner of the Oakland, California , art-pop duo Tune-Yards . Together, they’ve crafted a meticulously produced, exponentially layered song of empowerment that fluidly navigates the blurred lines between genres such as Alternative Hip-Hop, Indie, and Neo-Soul—territory where JayWood feels entirely at home. The song was premiered this morning by FLOOD Magazine , who write that it sees JayWood "... shedding any sense of modesty, fusing together elements of hip-hop, soul, and vibrant art-pop on a recording that takes aim at any artist unable to follow-up after making a bold statement. " Stream " BIG TINGS " Now! Encouraging resilience in the song’s lyricism, JayWood explains: “ This song switches perspective—sometimes I’m talking to myself, and sometimes I’m reaching out to the listener. Keep going, keep trying, don’t stop .” The single serves as a fitting preview of what’s to come later this year from JayWood: “ I got big tings coming down the pipe, so what .” He continues, “ The amount of times I've seen or heard someone say “ayo y’all better look out big things coming” with no follow through is crazy. I kinda wrote this song to say the same thing, but god forbid If I don’t mean it. “ BIG TINGS" was one of those songs that kinda made me nervous to write. I dunno when it became corny to talk about the idea of your hopes and dreams, but honestly fuck it. This track is such an alien only made weirder with the help of Tune-Yards they really helped make this beat into a proper song. But yeah, big tings comin' for me and I hope there’s some big tings comin' for you too!” As for Tune-Yards’ contribution to the song, Garbus says “ The file was named "BIG TINGS" so I sang, "big things coming, coming our way" and it felt right and good.  Big things coming for JayWood! with his clear artistic vision, broad imagination, hunger for musical adventure...we were honored to be along for the ride. ” JayWood – the nom de plume of Jeremy Haywood-Smith – most recently released 2023’s Grow On EP , on Captured Tracks . The EP includes two bonus tracks from the previous year’s Slingshot sessions, an "OG" version of the album single “ Thank You ,” and a cover of Tyler, the Creator 's “ SWEET ,” and the release’s lead single, “ Dirk Gently (Know Yourself) .” Check out more from JayWood: Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | TikTok | YouTube

  • L.S. Dunes - Violet

L.S. Dunes has returned with their highly anticipated sophomore album, Violet , out January 31, 2025, via Fantasy Records, and it’s nothing short of a revelation. Where Past Lives  was an exploration of chaos and catharsis, Violet  emerges as a profound reflection on growth, connection, and the transformative power of music. Guided by the masterful production of Will Yip (Balance and Composure, Movements, Circa Survive), the band delves into uncharted territories, crafting an album that feels both expansive and deeply intimate. From the outset, frontman Anthony Green made it clear that this album would be a departure from the darker themes of their debut album. Songs like “Forgiveness” and “Paper Tigers” embody a newfound sense of hope, celebrating resilience and the beauty of human connection. Green’s vocals soar with an emotional clarity that cuts through every track, delivering lyrics that feel like anthems for redemption and empowerment. “ I wanted to make a record that says there is magic in the world, ” Green has said—and he succeeds. The album’s title itself is a nod to the serendipitous and inexplicable moments that define the creative process. This underlying sense of magic threads through the album, offering listeners both introspection and inspiration. Standout Tracks: “Fatal Deluxe”: A stunning opening salvo, this track bridges the frenetic energy of Past Lives  with the melodic sophistication of Violet . Frank Iero’s intricate guitar work meshes seamlessly with the rhythm section, creating a sonic landscape that feels urgent and timeless. “Violet”: The title track is the album’s centrepiece. With its haunting yet empowering lyrics about justice and closure, it showcases the band’s ability to balance vulnerability with raw power. Payne’s basslines and Rule’s precise drumming anchor the track, allowing Green’s voice to truly shine. “Paper Tigers”: A testament to the band’s refusal to be confined by genre, this sludgy, riff-heavy ballad is both innovative and deeply emotional. Tucker Rule’s drumming adds texture and depth, making it a highlight of the album. “Forgiveness”: A delicate yet anthemic album closer, this track encapsulates the album’s overarching message of love and acceptance. Green’s vocal delivery is heart-wrenching, reminding listeners of the healing potential of music. One of the most striking aspects of Violet  is the band’s willingness to experiment. Tracks like “Machines” pulse with a confident restraint, while “You Deserve To Be Haunted” leans into theatrical darkness with dynamic crescendos. The interplay between Iero’s guitar and Stever’s melodies creates a rich tapestry of sound, and Yip’s production brings out the nuances of every single arrangement. With Violet , L.S. Dunes proves that they are more than a “supergroup”—they are a band with a distinct voice and vision. This album transcends the sum of its parts, offering something uniquely their own. It’s a bold statement of resilience and reinvention, showcasing the band’s ability to evolve while staying true to their roots. Violet  is not just an album—it’s an experience. From the raw vulnerability of its lyrics to the meticulous craftsmanship of its music, it’s a record that demands to be felt as much as it’s heard. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a newcomer, this is an album that will leave you believing in the magic of music all over again. Check out more from L.S. Jack Van Cleaf announced the release of his new sophomore album, JVC , released May 9 via Dualtone Records. Planting its flag halfway between the worlds of indie rock and Gen Z folk, it asks big questions about identity, home, and adulthood. For Jack, it's the culmination of a journey that began during his teenage years. " This album is all about the vertigo of growing up, It's about re-defining and re-understanding yourself. " Pre-order HERE . Today he released a new single "Rattlesnake," a reimagination of his own viral hit featuring a new duet with friend and fan Zach Bryan. It also featured every musician who had appeared on the song’s first recording, a group composed of Jack’s best friends from college. Listen to the single HERE . Watch the music video directed by Ivey Redding HERE . On the track, Jack stated, " Zach started sharing the song on social media, then eventually sent me a DM that said, 'If you ever want to record a version of this with me, I’m in!'" Jack remembers, adding "Zach really inspired me in the studio. I was moved by his dedication to the moment and capturing something alive, rather than painstakingly pursuing perfection with endless takes. ” Zach Bryan stated on Instagram, “ To become the best of friends with people through music in the city. Think that may be the point of all this. Jack & me re-recorded one of the best-written songs of all time (Jack is a genius) and hope u guys listen to it. ” Jack also announced an album release show on May 8 at The Blue Room in Nashville, TN, with support from Emma Ogier. Tickets are on sale now. For more information and tickets HERE . Years after penning his first song as a high school freshman in San Diego, Jack headed east to Nashville, where he studied songwriting at Belmont University and released his debut album, Fruit from the Trees , after graduation. Jack experienced unprecedented early industry debut album buzz, drawing the attention of the likes of Noah Kahan, opening for him on Jack's first-ever major US tour, as well as touring with artists from Briston Maroney to Madi Diaz. When his single “Rattlesnake” landed him a spot on Spotify's 2024 Best New Artist List with tastemaker playlist "Juniper," it drew over 13 million streams, and one fan in particular, Zach Bryan, became a major champion of Jack, covering the track on his social media. This unexpected success induced an intense period of self-doubt in Jack, " I was shell-shocked," he remembers. "I'd spent my whole life being told what to do every single day, and I always dreamed about growing up to be my own boss. Then graduation came, and I got what I wanted… but I realized I had no idea how to function on a day-to-day basis. " He regrouped and retreated to his songwriting, and found solace in creating music in far-flung locations like Joshua Tree and the Texas/Mexico border, where he and producer Alberto Sewald (Katy Kirby, Sierra Hull) created this remarkable body of work. Those geographic choices were deliberate, their landscapes evoking the spiritual barrenness of Jack's lyrics. "I felt like I was staring into an emotional desert when I wrote these songs, experiencing this feeling of desolation around me and looking for little signs of life," he explains. Alongside all-star collaborations with established stars like Zach Bryan and Gatlin — who features on seize-the-day anthem "Teenage Vampire" — the album also features his closest friends, Austin Burns, Ethan Fortenberry, Hunt Pennington, Adam Carpenter, Nathan Cimino, and Aaron Krak - plus Annika Bennett and Heaven Schmitt (aka Grumpy) who contribute background vocals - whom he met during his time at Belmont University and remain part of his closest creative circle. Previous Jack’s confessional and cathartic folk songs have garnered comparison to sparse verses of Nathaniel Rateliff and Gregory Alan Isakov and the directness of Kris Kristofferson and Leonard Cohen. On JVC , Jack takes another approach, focusing on blurring the dividing lines between acoustic singer-songwriter and electrified indie music. The result is an expansive sound, sparse one minute and grungy the next, dreamt up by an artist who's never been afraid to write songs that shine a light on his own challenges. A sharply-written record that measures the long, winding road from past to present, deftly capturing the vertigo of early adulthood, drawing on his own struggles with his post-college success and disorientation that followed. Songs like "Green" is a climate-conscious song whose indie rock pop hooks heighten the song's activist bite and moody acoustic rocker "Shouldn't Have Gone to L.A." find Jack in transit, caught between locations without a clear anchor. His songs draw on deeply personal experiences including a constantly evolving approach to religion and the emotional gravity of young adulthood to its full. With JVC , Jack Van Cleaf turns personal experience into something universal: a soundtrack to the years we all spend in existential free-fall, and while he finds gravity in the chaos, he has also made an album set to establish him as one of the biggest breakout singer-songwriters of his generation. • Kerry King, Municipal Waste, and Alien Weaponry - Winnipeg, MB

Legendary thrash guitarist Kerry King set Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada ablaze on January 25, 2025, with a date on his inaugural headline solo tour, delivering a high-octane performance at the Burton Cummings Theatre that left no doubt about his post-Slayer prowess. The frigid January night celebrated metal, with Alien Weaponry and Municipal Waste providing blistering support sets before Kerry King and his band took center stage. Kicking off the evening was New Zealand’s Alien Weaponry, whose Maori-inspired thrash and groove metal captivated the Winnipeg audience. Their set began with the powerful “Raupatu,” instantly drawing fans into their unique fusion of cultural storytelling and heavy metal riffs. Highlights of their set included the bone-shaking “Rū Ana Te Whenua” and the fan-favo u rite “Kai Tangata,” which had the crowd moshing in primal unison. The trio’s energy and authenticity set the tone for an unforgettable night. Photos by Samuel Stevens Photography. Next up, crossover thrash titans Municipal Waste transformed the Burton Cummings Theatre into a chaotic metal party rager. Marking their first time back to Winnipeg in over twelve years, the band hit the stage with relentless speed and infectious humour, they tore through a fourteen-track career-spanning setlist, which featured songs like “Sadistic Magician,” “Slime and Punishment,” “You're Cut Off,” “Grave Dive,” and massive fan-favourites like “The Art of Partying” and “The Trashin' of the Christ.” Frontman Tony Foresta commanded the crowd with charisma, and by the time they closed with the anthemic “Born To Party,” the venue was a swirling pit of headbangers revelling in the band’s anarchic fun. Photos by Samuel Stevens Photography. The anticipation in the room reached a fever pitch as the stage lights dimmed for Kerry King’s arrival. Backed by a formidable band of heavy hitters in the metal community—vocalist Mark Osegueda (Death Angel), drummer Paul Bostaph (Slayer, ex-Testament), guitarist Kyle Sanders (ex-Hellyeah, ex-Bloodsimple), and guitarist Phil Demmel (ex-Machine Head, ex-Vio-lence)—King unleashed a ferocious set that balanced a majority of his new solo material with Slayer classics, proving he’s as vital to the genre as ever. Opening the set with the menacing “Where I Reign,” King immediately showcased his signature razor-sharp riffing. New songs like “Trophies of the Tyrant” and “Residue” bristled with aggression, seamlessly fitting alongside Slayer staples played during the set like “Disciple” and “At Dawn They Sleep.” A nod to his influences came with covers of Iron Maiden’s “Purgatory” and “Killers,”—which were also dedicated to the late Paul Di'Anno—and were delivered with a thrash twist that paid homage to metal’s roots. The crowd erupted into crazed chaos for the set's third and second last songs, the Slayer classics “Raining Blood” and “Black Magic,” their iconic riffs reverberating through the historic theatre. However, it was King’s solo material that truly impressed fans during the night, with tracks like “From Hell I Rise” and “Two Fists” cementing his identity as a solo artist capable of carrying his legacy forward. The stage production matched the intensity of the performances, with fiery visuals, strobes, and a thunderous sound system amplifying every single note. King’s guitar work was front and center, his presence commanding as he prowled the stage. The intimate setting of the Burton Cummings Theatre allowed fans to fully immerse themselves in the raw power of the music, making for an electrifying connection between King, his band, and the entire audience. Kerry King’s first headline solo tour is a triumph, a testament to his enduring influence in the metal world. In Winnipeg, he delivered a masterclass in thrash, supported by two outstanding opening acts that further cemented the night as a celebration of heavy music’s past, present, and future. For fans of thrash metal, this tour is an unmissable experience—proof that Kerry King’s reign in metal is far from over. Photos by Samuel Stevens Photography.

  • ASkySoBlack - Touch Heaven

Philadelphia’s ASkySoBlack makes a stunning debut into the full-length album arena with Touch Heaven , set for release on January 31, 2025, via New Morality Zine. Known for their ability to meld nostalgic 90s alternative with the fiery aggression of early 2000s emo, the band—comprised of vocalist and guitarist Jordan Shteif, drummer Alec Martin, bassist Norman Staley, and guitarist Liam Coombe—delivers an 11-track exploration of heartbreak, guilt, and the intricacies of emotional turmoil. Touch Heaven  is a masterclass in balancing melody with chaos. The band’s evolution is palpable; the album feels more introspective and mature than their previous EPs, What Is Yet to Come?  (2021) and Autumn in the Water (2022). Lyrically, Shteif opens a window into his soul, chronicling the disintegration of a decade-long relationship with brutal honesty. Tracks like “I Wish I Was Not” and the album closer “Sore For You” resonate deeply, their haunting lyrics carried by a sound that alternates between lush atmospherics and abrasive crescendos. The production, handled by Adam Chichoki (gatherers, Soul Blind) at Timber Studios, brings out every nuance of the band’s layered instrumentation. The dense, cascading guitars of “Boy Like a Bruise” echo the best of bands such as Deftones and Hum, while the thunderous drumming on “Did It All Wrong” channels Glassjaw's unrelenting energy. Yet, even in their heaviest moments, ASkySoBlack maintains a melodic sensibility that feels uniquely their own. Standout Tracks: “Portrait In Private” – A standout in both songwriting and arrangement, this track slowly builds from subdued melancholy to a cathartic, soaring climax. It perfectly encapsulates the album's theme of vulnerability turned defiance. “Carousel House” – This song embodies the band's "anti-shoegaze" ethos, blending shimmering guitar lines with jagged vocal delivery. Its bittersweet tone is both comforting and unsettling. “Every Heart Needs Some Mileage” – A much slower, contemplative piece that highlights Shteif’s vocal fragility, paired with subtle instrumentation that feels like a warm embrace. While Touch Heaven  retains the DNA of ASkySoBlack’s earlier works, it trades some of their raw edge for greater refinement and emotional depth. The record’s themes—loss, longing, and the failure to change—are universally relatable, but their delivery feels personal and intimate. Shteif’s voice carries a weight that feels lived-in, turning every lyric into a confessional. Despite its heavy subject matter, the album also offers moments of hope. Tracks like “Hold Me Holy” hint at redemption, with lyrics that suggest an acceptance of imperfection and the possibility of moving forward. ASkySoBlack’s Touch Heaven  is more than just a debut—it’s a statement. The band proves they are not afraid to bare their vulnerabilities, nor do they shy away from experimenting with their sound. By balancing aggressive post-hardcore tendencies with expansive, melancholic textures, they’ve crafted a record that feels timeless yet immediate. This album firmly places ASkySoBlack in the upper echelon of modern alternative music, setting the stage for what promises to be a long and impactful career. Whether you’re a fan of Smashing Pumpkins’ grandeur, Deftones’ atmosphere, or Glassjaw’s intensity, Touch Heaven  is an essential listen. • Max McNown - Night Diving

Nashville-based, Oregon-raised singer-songwriter Max McNown returns with Night Diving , his stunning sophomore album co-released via Fugitive Recordings, The Orchard, and Columbia Records on January 24, 2025. A remarkable fusion of folk, country, and pop, Night Diving  affirms McNown’s position as one of Nashville’s most promising new voices, building upon the success of his critically acclaimed debut album, Wandering  (2024). Produced by Jamie Kenney (Colbie Caillat, Laci Kaye Booth), the album explores bold new sonic landscapes while maintaining McNown’s signature ability to soothe the mind and uplift the soul. The album’s title track, "Night Diving," serves as a haunting meditation on cycles of addiction. Co-written with Kenney and singer-songwriter Erin McCarley, the song encapsulates the struggle of confronting personal demons. “We stepped into the writing room and Erin asked, ‘What’s something in your life that you keep fighting and can’t seem to overcome?’” McNown recalls. The result is an ethereal, immersive experience layered with moody guitar tones and evocative rhythms, solidifying it as one of the album’s emotional high points. Beyond the mesmerizing title track, Night Diving  is filled with introspective storytelling and lush instrumentation. "Better Me For You (Brown Eyes)" offers a heartfelt reflection on self-improvement in the face of love, while the single, "Roses and Wolves," featuring country star Hailey Whitters, blends stunning harmonies with evocative lyricism. "Hotel Bible" provides a warm, reassuring counterpoint to themes of self-doubt, and the album's closing track, "Freezing in November (Revisited)," revisits McNown’s earlier work with a newfound emotional depth. Working with Kenney, McNown embraced a variety of experimental production techniques to create the album’s rich sonic tapestry. Elements like percussive beats constructed from train tracks and the sound of chains against the floor add unique textures to tracks like "Won’t Let Me Go." These subtle yet effective details elevate the album’s atmosphere, making it a truly immersive listen. At just 23, McNown has already carved an impressive path in the industry. Named Billboard’s Country Rookie of the Month and featured as CMT’s Next Up Now artist, his breakthrough single A Lot More Free  has garnered RIAA Gold certification, topped multiple charts, and earned him a devoted following. With over 2 million TikTok followers, McNown’s grassroots rise—from busking on piers in Southern California to topping streaming charts—stands as a testament to his authenticity and dedication. Night Diving  is a deeply introspective and sonically adventurous album that showcases McNown’s evolution as an artist. With its masterful storytelling, haunting melodies, and rich production, the album cements him as one of country-folk’s most exciting new talents. Whether you’re a longtime fan or discovering him for the first time, Night Diving  is an essential listen that proves McNown is here to stay. • High. - Come Back Down EP

High.’s debut EP, Come Back Down,  which is set for release on January 24, 2025, via Kanine Records, is a swirling eight-track shoegaze triumph that captures the raw, unvarnished spirit of New Jersey’s DIY scene while propelling the genre into modern territory. With vocalist and guitarist Christian Castan and bassist and vocalist Bridget Bakie at the creative helm, the band delivers a heartfelt and immersive sonic experience, blending churning guitars, emotive basslines, and introspective lyricism into a cohesive whole. The opening track “In A Hole” sets the tone with a cascade of shimmering guitars and reverb-soaked vocals that feel both expansive and intimate. Castan’s delivery carries a sense of yearning that permeates the entire EP, while Bakie’s bass provides a steady yet evocative foundation. “Catcher” follows with a hazy urgency, showcasing drummer Jack Miller’s dynamic range as he guides the song through its dreamlike crescendos. The EP's third track, “George,” stands out as one of the most emotionally charged tracks, weaving Castan’s poignant lyrics with atmospheric instrumentation that’s both nostalgic and forward-looking. Meanwhile, “Flowers” offers a more delicate interlude, with soft vocal harmonies that highlight the chemistry between Castan and Bakie. Tracks like “Dead” and “Painbox” dive deeper into a somewhat softer, but darker sonic territory, recalling the influence of acts like Nothing and DIIV while still carving out High.’s distinct voice. The layers of distortion and feedback create an enveloping wall of sound, but it’s the restraint in their arrangements that makes the chaos feel purposeful. The EP's second last track, “Lifetime,” shifts gears with a brighter, almost anthemic tone, celebrating themes of friendship and resilience amid life’s uncertainties. Bakie’s bassline takes center stage here, its melodic counterpoint perfectly complementing Zavala’s textured guitar work. Whereas, the closing track, “Bomber,” is a cathartic finale, balancing moments of delicate vulnerability with explosive bursts of sound that leave a lasting impression. The album’s production, spearheaded by Matthew Molnar (Sunflower Bean, Dead Nation) and polished by Jeff Ziegler (The War On Drugs, Kurt Vile), maintains an authentic, raw edge without sacrificing clarity. Recorded in a blend of intimate studios from Greenpoint to Philly, the record feels deeply rooted in its origins while reaching for something universal. Each track is meticulously crafted, yet there’s an intentional looseness that keeps the songs grounded in their DIY ethos. Come Back Down  is an impressive debut that feels like a love letter to shoegaze’s heyday and a promise of its enduring relevance. High. captures the highs and lows of youth, friendship, and introspection with sincerity and artistry. For fans of the genre, the album is both a comfort and a revelation—proof that shoegaze is alive, well, and evolving. Check out more from High. : Instagram Twitter Bandcamp YouTube

Tickets on sale now, for more info visit: https://www.johnsplithoff.com/tour . Far From Here  draws on classic soul, pop, jazz, roots and R&B, showcasing one of the most soothing and soulful voices of his generation, with arrangements often focused on his voice and just piano/guitar, a sound he wanted to recreate after performing the tracks solo on tour. Mostly self produced by John, his voice and musical approach recalls the icons of music from Michael McDonald to Sade, as well as its more celebrated innovators like Benny Sings and Mk.Gee. John today released two singles, on “Tangled,” which was the first song he wrote for the album, in which he blends classic pop with soulful R&B and shares stories of the joys of romantic entanglement. The song is paired with soulful slow burner “Magenta (Days Go By)”, which showcases his atmospheric funk pop, and the perfect intro to his bold new sound, which is cohesive and eclectic. Schooled in timeless songwriter classicism his music often draws on similar values of musicality and song structure, with strong melodic hooks and extended bridges, that have been overshadowed for shorter stream and radio ready singles in modern music. Discussing the track with Relix Magazine , who exclusively premiered “Magenta (Days Go By)”, John stated, “At the heart of it, these two songs depict different aspects of love and relationships. “Tangled” simply deals with the euphoria of infatuation and getting lost in the potential mess of it all. While “Magenta,” in a more complex manner, takes memories and the passage of time within a relationship and associates them with different colors, something akin to synesthesia. Some memories are red and full of life, some memories are a melancholic blue. Mix red and blue together and you get….” Listen to “Tangled” HERE Watch “Tangled” music video HERE Listen To “Magenta” HERE Watch “Magenta” music video HERE John was raised in a music-filled home in the suburbs of Chicago and developed a deep appreciation at an early age for the timeless sounds of Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd, Earth, Wind & Fire, Fleetwood Mac, these cornerstone influences shaping his unique musical identity. He had piano lessons and received his first guitar at 13, teaching himself to play through obsessively exploring the music of the '60s, '70s, and '80s. The catalyst of his music career began in high school when he was passed over for a spot on the baseball team, and auditioned for a vocal group on a whim. From there he started writing songs, performing in bands, leading eventually to a degree in Jazz Performance from the renowned Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. He moved to New York City after crafting a 5-track EP in Chicago, which is not so subtly entitled The Move . Playing his first gigs around the city he wrote and recorded a first crop of singles while teaching private lessons, performing at weddings, and singing commercial jingles. This led to the eventual release of his breakout single, “Sing to You”, which changed his life. The track amassed over 150 million streams, landed on key Spotify playlists, and led to John hearing his music played in public for the first time. He witnessed his music climb to the top of AC Radio, alongside landing international headliner spots and festivals. Despite all his industry success, John has remained an enigma and prevalent behind-the-scenes collaborator, preferring at times to support the musical efforts of offers, in sacrifice of his own. He has performed with some of the great artists of our time, from Sting, George Benson, Ben Folds, and jazz trumpeter Chris Botti on the David Foster-produced single “Paris . ” He had to figure out what would come next. So John made a big decision—actually, a series of big decisions. He travelled around the country, opening for Andy Grammer and performing at Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo in 2018, navigated Covid lockdown in NYC, then got engaged and married to his high school sweetheart in 2021 before he eventually moved to Los Angeles a few months later in 2022. He has continued touring non-stop, bringing his soulful pop style to such high-profile shows including an opening slot for Teddy Swims in 2024. And from all of this change, exploration, confusion, and excitement came a rush of inspiration, which became the backbone of John’s new album Far From Here. Far From Here  reflects on his dramatic life changes while told through vignettes capturing poignant personal memories. On “Far From Here”  Splithoff examines his search for a new perspective with his New York to LA Move. “City Days” which features Chris Botti on trumpet, pays homage to his relationship with New York City at the various stages of his life. Tracks like “Glacier” symbolize relationships growing apart against the backdrop of Montana's natural beauty, while “Oh Betty” tells a nostalgic story about the Buick he drove during his college days in Miami. “Same Page” recalls a transformative camping trip in Arizona that inspired his move west, and “Kyoto Snow” transports listeners to Japan, where he saw snowfall for the first time at a temple in Kyoto. Far From Here  also draws on his shifting family and friendship relationships which he holds so dear. “A lot of these songs are associated with a time and place that hold a lot of meaning to me,” he says. “I also noticed, within all that change, how my relationships ebbed and flowed—I felt closer to people I didn't know as well, and I felt distant from people who I considered my best friends and family. So it’s been an eye-opening path.” Out of the turmoil and disruption, the uncertainty, the ups and downs of the last few years, John Splithoff emerged with a transformation in his attitude and his approach. With Far From Here , he is now perfectly poised to make his musical mark and his striking and evocative album is set to be one of the most celebrated of 2025.
